About Us
Georgia has played a significant role in the history of garden clubs . . . Twelve ladies met in an ante-bellum drawing room in Athens, Georgia, in January 1891 to organize the first garden club in America. “Little did they realize that they were lighting the candle that half a century later would be casting its beams throughout a great nation, shedding rays of light, beauty and happiness in the paths of thousands of followers. Thus, there came into being the first of countless garden clubs that today spread over the land like a benediction.” (Quoted from National Council History – 1965)
In the beginning . . . On February 9, 1999, St. Marys Garden Club became a reality. Twenty ladies met with Janet Massey to discuss the club’s new beginnings. A seed was planted that has grown and flourished. We presently have 50 members including
men and women of all ages, abilities and interests.
Each year the club has been very active in projects and programs to educate members, to encourage them in trying new ideas for their own homes and gardens, and to improve, educate, and beautify our community and conserve our natural areas. Our club is fully federated and is open to both women and men.
We are a Member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc., Deep South Region, The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., and Oleander District. Our annual dues are $25.
Most of our educational programs and meetings are open to the community. Programs include speakers, field trips and workshops on a variety of topics.
Our major fundraising event is our Spring and Fall Plant Sale, held in May and again in October, where we sell plants and other garden-related items grown and donated by our members. Our plant sale are held on the grounds of Orange Hall. We followed current mandates to ensure a safe environment for both our members and the public. We also sell three series of note cards. One features photos of prominent historical sites of St. Marys, the second series is of local flora and the third is of pollinators at work .
All photographs were taken by members of our club.
As you can see from reading about us, we have a variety of activities that you can chose to participate in. We encourage potential members interested in joining our club to attend a meeting or two, and read the Handbook which includes the By-laws, committee descriptions and other pertinent information. You can find our Handbook on this website under the Awards and more tab.
